How do I get to the Social Security Office?

  • Homewood Mountain Resort Shuttle - We will try our best to provide a free shuttle to the Social Security Office but we can't guarantee a shuttle will be available. It is best to make your own plans.

  • From Reno/Tahoe Airport - We recommend scheduling your flight for a morning arrival.  The Social Security office is only about 1½ miles from the airport (3 min bus ride or 25 min walk).  With a morning arrival into the airport, you will have enough time to to go to the Social Security office before going to Lake Tahoe.  If arriving later, you can also stay the night in Reno and go to the Social Security office the next morning.

  • From Truckee/Lake Tahoe - Take the North Lake Tahoe Express to the Reno/Tahoe airport.  From the airport you can either walk or take the bus to the Social Security Office. Reservations MUST be made ate least 24 hours in advance.

  • If arriving in another city outside the Reno/Tahoe area - You can also apply at another Social Security Office or just apply at the Reno office.

How do I apply for my Social Security Card?

  • Read the International Students and Social Security Numbers document.

  • Register in SEVIS before applying for your Social Security Card.  The earliest you can register in SEVIS is the same as your DS start date.  We highly recommend you do this as soon as possible to prevent any delays in processing your Social Security Card application.

  • Request to have your Social Security Card sent to: PO Box 165, Homewood, CA 96141.

  • You will receive a receipt/letter verifying that you have applied for your social security number.  Give a copy of this receipt to Human Resources as soon as possible.

  • Your Social Security Card may take up to 60 days to arrive, so apply as soon as possible.
